JOSHUA BATTY

International Concert Flutist

“This flute will be the first instrument I have purchased in over 15 years and I am immensely excited to further discover the colour world of this sensitive, vocal and powerful flute as well as joining the Altus family. It feels languid, resonant, with great mechanism and scale also – a new chapter which I cannot wait to explore!

Joshua Batty is an internationally renowned flautist known for his expressive artistry, technical brilliance, and commitment to reshaping the flute’s role in 21st-century music. He joined the Sydney Symphony Orchestra as Principal Flute in 2019 at the age of 27, following two years in the same role with Ireland’s RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

Joshua studied under Michael Cox at the Royal Academy of Music in London on a full scholarship supported by Sir Elton John, and continued his training at the Haute École de Musique de Genève with Jacques Zoon. During his studies, he served as Principal Flute with both the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. In recognition of his achievements, he was later awarded an Associateship of the Royal Academy of Music.

Early career accolades include awards from the British Flute Society, the Royal Overseas League, LSO Wind Academy (formerly Shell Competition) as well as participation in the Maxence Larrieu International Competition. These formative experiences launched a vibrant international career.

Over the past decade, Joshua has prolifically performed, recorded and toured as Principal Flute with over 30 leading orchestras across the globe, and appeared as a soloist under the baton of distinguished conductors such as John Wilson, Johannes Fritzsch, and Simone Young. His solo appearances have taken him to iconic venues including Buckingham Palace, the Sydney Opera House amongst others.

Dedicated to expanding the flute repertoire, Joshua is a prolific commissioner of new works. His forthcoming debut album, *Perfect Imperfections* (2027), will feature compositions and collaborations with William Barton, Sir Stephen Hough, Aristea Mellos, Harry Sdraulig. The album will launch with a recital at UKARIA in July 2026 and a national broadcast on ABC Classic FM. He has also initiated a major new commissioning project with composers Harry Sdraulig and Nigel Westlake, further enriching the flute’s concerto and chamber music literature.

Joshua is equally passionate about education and advocacy. At 23, he was appointed flute tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music and later at the University of Melbourne. He recently launched a national flute course model that tours across Australia, focusing on holistic resonance, artistic identity, masterclasses, and personal career-building in the music industry.

In addition to performing and teaching, Joshua curates charity concerts and has raised over $50,000 for causes including bushfire recovery, pandemic relief through Support Act, the Ukraine War Appeal, and WIRES animal welfare.

Having recently stepped away from his orchestral chair to focus on both his solo and portfolio career, 2025 has seen him perform and teach in France, Estonia, Romania, UK, Ireland, South Korea, Luxembourg, New Zealand, USA, Sweden, Denmark & Norway, with further recital, masterclass and concerto projects soon to be announced.

Joshua is represented by Emblem Artists, Australia.
