TIMOTHY FRANCIS

Associate Principal Trumpet
Orchestra Victoria

Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, Timothy grew up in a musical household and received his first trumpet lessons from his father from the age of six. In his early years, Timothy was part of a number of youth music programs in Brisbane including Queensland Youth Orchestras and the Voices of Birralee. He earned a Bachelor of Music (performance) degree at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University studying under Phil Ryan. Postgraduate study led him to Germany and the Netherlands. He had the privilege of studying under a number of renowned pedagogues throughout his time in Europe. Most influential were Professor Wim Van Hasselt (Hochschule für Musik Freiburg); Professor Wolfgang Guggenberger (Hochschule für Musik Trossingen); Professor William Forman and Martin Wagemann (Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” Berlin); Georg Birner and Malte Burba.

Timothy has a wide range of orchestral training and experience. He was a member of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra Academy, Praktikant (intern) with the Staatsorchester Braunschweig and also a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra for their 2013 European Tour. Prior to returning to Australia Timothy was on contract with the Philharmonisches Orchester Landestheater Coburg as second trumpet. He has also had the opportunity to play as a guest with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg, Ensemble Resonanz and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Timothy joined Orchestra Victoria as their Associate Principal Trumpet at the start of 2020. He currently teaches at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Monash University and Eltham High School. He is also a regular guest with the Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras.

While many musicians have supported Timothy on his musical journey, he would not have achieved what he has without the support of his parents. Their love for music and encouragement to pursue all forms of music making were vital.

Tim plays:
